Sincero gives Start up Loan advice to North East pastry experts, Blackberries Patisserie

Sam Burdess, Blackberries Patisserie’s Head Pastry Chef and Owner was seeking funds to upgrade the Houghton le Spring patisserie shop. After a conversation with Julie Skevington of Sincero, Julie advised on a Start-up Loan. Even though the business was approaching their second year of trading, they still qualified for this low cost option.

Blackberries Patisserie wanted to make improvements and make their shop look high end and appetising for passing trade. They used the Start-up Loan to add bespoke glass cabinets to display their petit gateaux, fudge, cupcakes, cookies, macarons, tarts and more. 

Sam mentions, “The shop display and décor needed to be elevated to match the quality of the goods that we create. We operate at a high standard and our manta is ‘Bringing the Hotel to the High Street’, the customers whole experience is paramount. I’ve brought what I have learnt over the past 25+ years working in the most luxurious hotels worldwide and alongside some of the most revered chefs, it was the right time to bring this home and start the Blackberries Patisserie story.”

Another decision made by Sam and was to move the small shop kitchen off-site, to a much larger unit within Houghton le Spring industrial estate. Again, Julie sign posted Sam towards a grant that she could apply for. With this further funding, the larger unit can house a hotel style operation with room enough for equipment and appliances, ovens, blast chiller and more staff. 

Julie commented “This business is one to watch, Sam is a great example of hard work, talent and entrepreneurship.  She’s including her family, local businesses and the community by venturing into training and apprenticeships. The goodies are an absolute treat and it was a pleasure finding funding for Blackberries Patisserie.”
